Dear ITMI Certified Tour Director:

I'd like to take a moment to introduce you to an exciting travel insurance product that you can utilize as a profit center, while providing peace of mind for your travelers and helping to support our philanthropic mission. ITMI Certified Tour Directors organizing and selling their own tours as Tour Operators are automatically qualified to provide Smart Travel Protection to their clients.

Smart Travel Protection is a travel insurance plan established by ITMI exclusively for use by its alumni. The plan is underwritten by Stonebridge Casualty Insurance Company, a member of the Aegon USA family of companies. Aegon USA is the 5th largest insurer in the United States; and their parent company, Aegon N.V., is the 7th largest in the world. The Plan Administrator is Trip Mate. Trip Mate/Aegon offers the most comprehensive Travel Protection products in the marketplace today.

What makes Smart Travel Protection special? It is a group travel insurance plan designed around the needs of ITMI Alumni who want to package and sell their own tours - giving your clients exceptional coverage at a reasonable price - in short, providing value that is difficult to be found anywhere else.

Helping to Support the ITMI Mission

The net premium you pay for each policy includes a commission of 5% for ITMI. ITMI donates 100% of that commission to Tourism Cares™, the travel industry's premier philanthropic organization. All ITMI donations go to the Dr. William Newton Scholarship Fund, which awards scholarships to financial-need students studying travel and tourism. Dr. Newton was a co-founder of ITMI. For those of you who never knew him, Bill was always a leader in voicing Tour Director and Tour Industry issues with wisdom and courage. Bill worked hard behind the scenes for 25 years, with government leaders, Tour Operators, Suppliers, DMO's and Tour Directors . . . for the benefit of everyone! He helped "raise the bar" for Tour Directors.

Getting Started with Smart Travel Protection


To get started, you will need a User ID and Password to login: send an email to me <itmitourdirector(at)aol.com> and ITMI will create a user account for you. With this information, just click the "Login" button at the top of this page to enter the confidential section of the insurance website, where you can view the low net rates and create insurance bookings. ITMI holds the travel insurance license, so as an ITMI Certified Tour Director you can start using the plan right away!

Smart Travel Protection has everything your travelers need - most importantly, peace of mind that comes from an excellent travel insurance plan administered by industry leaders. I suggest you include Smart Travel Protection for everyone on an opt-out basis, and give them the option to add the Cancel for Any Reason coverage. The minimum group size is 10 participants.

ITMI Smart Travel Protection Highlights

Time-sensitive Benefits: If the premium payment is received by you within 15 days of the date the traveler's initial Trip deposit is received, three important benefits are included:

  • Trip Cancellation or Interruption resulting from Financial Insolvency of an airline, cruise line or tour operator. Your travel suppliers such as cruise lines, tour operators and airlines, cannot insure against their own financial demise, which is why Financial Insolvency coverage in this travel insurance plan is so valuable.

  • Coverage for Terrorist Acts. Provides a cancellation or interruption benefit if the Terrorist Act occurs (a) within 30 days of the Scheduled Departure Date for your traveler's Trip; and (b) in the traveler's departure city or in a city which is a scheduled destination for the Trip.

  • Waiver of the exclusion for Pre-Existing Medical Conditions provided the traveler is not already disabled from travel at the time of his or her premium payment.

* Cancel for Any Reason: If this option is purchased, the traveler will be reimbursed 75% of their non-refundable Trip costs, in cash, if they cancel their Trip for any reason not otherwise covered by the policy. Travel suppliers who offer their own cancel-for-any-reason benefit typically issue only a voucher for future travel with them. By issuing a 75% refund in cash -- which you can use anywhere -- Smart Travel Protection is superior.

Net Rates

With low net rates you have unmatched flexibility. You can either mark up the rates to whatever level you want, thereby using the insurance as a profit center; or don't mark up the rates at all and pass along the savings to the traveler. The choice is yours.
